Boby Mill Roller Bearing Conversion
Do you have a Boby Mill fitted with Phosphor Bronze Bearings?
If so you should consider the advantages of having your mill converted to modern roller Bearings.
Problems associated with phosphor bronze bearings as used on earlier Portious and Boby mills. To minimise load friction and avoid overheating phosphor bronze bearings are only able to run at approximately 300 rpm.
Constant maintenance is required to maintain the correct Viscosity and oil levels to enable the bearings to run at their correct temperature
Phosphor bronze bearings are prone to oil leaks, creating a hazardous oily working area. It is also quite possible for them to leak undetected inside the mill, which in turn would eventually contaminate the grist.
The leather seals fitted to phosphor bronze bearings loose their rigidity due to the saturation of oil. This allows the oil to leak out of the bearings.
Replacing a phosphor bronze bearing involves mill downtime to allow for the accurate machining the bearings require, this is itself is a costly operation on top of the potential loss of production.
A modern roller bearing conversion would eliminate all of these problems.
